We plan on full time RVing just as soon as our youngest graduates from high school. He's currently a sophomore. Not that anyone is counting but this means we have 866 more days until we can officially hit the road. Of course, we may not leave on the same day he graduates...but we could! I'm currently teaching in the same school our son attends so the clock is helping me survive the daily grind too! Kevin is currently kicking it at home and getting everything prepared. He spends days researching and getting the RV ready. Currently his project is the solar/generator/battery issue since we plan to boondock often. When we hit the road, I will teach online for cash (and hopefully insurance) and we will either boondock on BLM land or work camp somewhere for a free site. We plan to hit all 50 states. We've hit a lot already but we are only going to count the states we hit in the new fifth wheel (with the exception of Alaska). So far, we've had the new RV for less than a month and we've been to seven states (plus Alaska) so that means we have 42 to go! As for Hawaii, we will fly there and rent a van to camp in there. We figure that counts as a sticker since it wouldn't make sense to ship our truck and fifth wheel to Hawaii just to get a sticker!

I got a text on Friday at school. Kevin asked "Why are we not camping this weekend?" and it was followed by 10 reasons why we should go. Of course, I responded as soon as I saw the message with "Let's go". When I got home from school, Kevin had the truck packed so I parked my car in the garage, hopped in the truck and we were off. We were planning on going to Quartzsite next weekend for the big RV show anyhow and Kevin thought it would be a good idea to go this weekend to find a camping spot since the show gets busy. He was right. Despite the government shutdown, Quartzsite was in full swing. It's crazy how much money they aren't collecting in camping fees with the shutdown! We found our piece of the desert and set up. Saturday we drove around Quartzsite and then decided to head to Parker to visit the Blue Water Casino. We had coupons for free play so why not?! We played a while and then headed back to La Posa South to make dinner. Kevin grilled the best steaks this weekend! In fact, we are planning on recreating that meal when we return next weekend! Today we simply put our chairs in the basement and locked up! We will be back next Friday just as soon as school lets out! The backstory: Kevin grew up camping with his parents in a Class C. My idea of camping was a Holiday Inn Express. A couple of years ago, I went out and bought a 28 foot Wildwood travel trailer. Why not? I love to travel and Kevin seemed to think we would enjoy it. We started by taking short trips to the Oregon coast. Before long we took the Wildwood across country to Washington DC. Last summer we went north to Alaska. (side note: I LOVED Kluane National Park in the Yukon Territory SO SO SO much more than any place we went in Alaska) The Wildwood was a great trailer but it was starting to get a little uncomfortable. First of all, it had triple high bunks that our son just HAD to have. Yet, he didn't take to camping like we did and always found a way to stay home. We had wasted space and wanted a king size bed, theater seats, a regular sized sofa, a table that wasn't a booth and a better shower. This past Thanksgiving (2018) we looked at an Alpine fifth wheel and fell in love. However, it had issues so we decided to get a brand new 2019 Jayco North Point 315RLTS. We LOVE it! It has everything we wanted with the exception of an outdoor TV (and Kevin is working on that now). Within days of taking ownership of the new fifth wheel, we took it on trip to River Island State Park in Parker, Arizona for the weekend. A week later we were on our way to Florida. Those are separate stories but here are the photos from those trips. Parker, Arizona trip:Florida Trip (NM, Texas, Louisiana, MS, Alabama included) |
